-beginning of hike is a flat couple of miles on narrow bison paths through waist and chest high grass. Dry ground, lots of bison tracks and cow pies -rock formations on the right side -after a couple of miles, turn right and follow creek bed uphill into deer haven -difficult section. Finding a path that is walkable is tough, so is the terrain - tall and thick grass, steep ravines cutting through, crumbly ground, cacti, prickly bushes. Sun was setting so mosquitoes were out. I went down wrong way once and also took a couple of falls. Slow going -ran into a rattlesnake on the way up through deer haven. Gave it some space. So cool -other animals are frogs, birds, antelope droppings. Coyote calls at night. Bats buzzing by tent -once up at 2900, ~the elevation of the highest point, find a creek bed and walk in it -creek bed winds through rock formations, mostly bone dry/cracked but other parts are damp and others muddy and need to be watched out for -continued in creek bed, winding, for as far as the setting light would allow. Had headlamp on, was hustling -found a flat, sandy part of the bed to set up camp on
