This was a crazy hike due to it being more or less a last minute hike. Saturday I decided to go along with my bro-in-law on a day-hike. He is going to climb Mt Kilimanjaro next month and needed to get some miles and altitude training. I knew we were probably starting late but knew we weren't necessarily trying to get to the top of Mt Langley but at least get to the top of New Army Pass for the altitude time. We left the parking lot at 8:30am and made it to the top of New Army Pass at 11:30 which was great time for us. Looking over to the top my stomach dropped and knew we had at least a four hour hike ahead of us which meant hiking in the dark for two hours on the hike back. The climb up was a trudge and wish I took more pictures of the big cairns that marked the path. We met a runner coming down and he recommended going up along the left side which was confirmed by some hikers that just came down that way. Beautiful view and weather all day long. I actually love the afternoon sun for lighting and pictures. Going down Langley was a breeze and we kept up a fast pace all the way back. Got to the bottom of Old Army Pass (I wasn't in the mood to climb up the grade to go down New Army Pass) in about 2 hours and back to the parking lot in 5 hours from the top. Total time was about 12 hours and while the distance says 20.5 it was more like 21 and some change. My phone quit working at the top so the tracking stopped. I would definitely do this hike again but allow for more time or camp at the lakes.
