iWatch read 8.58 miles. Track (6/23/17, 10:04:39AM) Hike organized by Jonathan Crowther. His description below. ======================== We will do the hike that I had to hand over to Alex last time: https://www.meetup.com/San-Jose-Mid-Week-Hikers-Group/events/231889876/ Except, I have to change the route due to trail closure (use Towne Fire Rd after lunch in Shaw Flat trail camp), and skip the Parke Gulch loop (to save energy on a hot day). There are two wet-feet creek crossings, so poles are useful (for balance); the first crossing you may get away with dry feet balancing on logs, but the second one (near end of hike) is pretty much guaranteed to have wet feet, so I do recommend water-shoes and small towel (to dry feet). Last minute decision to drop out is fine: I just need to know by 8:30am on Friday so we won't wait for you. Meet 10:00am at Hoffman Flat trailhead, Wurr Road. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.273926,-122.285380 Remember the traffic delays on Highway 84 due to road works. If coming from south, maybe Page Mill Rd then Alpine Rd would be fun! Anything else -- see meetup link above. Cheers, Jonathan ===================================================== [Original hike description.] Summary: This moderate hike of about 9.0 miles and 1500 feet total ascent should result in less than 4.5 hours total duration. Parking is at the Hoffman Flat Trailhead on Wurr Road near Memorial Park. Parking is free but limited (please carpool). There are two wide creek crossings, likely to result in wet feet (bring small towel and water shoes). We'll have a lunch break along the way (likely in Parke Gulch Grove). Trails are mostly under trees. Dogs not allowed. Carpooling: Strongly recommended because parking is somewhat limited and distant. Please arrange amongst yourselves. Parking and start point: Hoffman Flat Trailhead parking area is along Wurr Road, use eastern junction off Pescadero Creek Road. Do not enter the main entrance for Memorial County Park. Address is approximate. Coordinates 37.273927,-122.285377. Parking is free. To get to this location, it is recommended to take the longer route via Highway 84 through La Honda than to use the shorter Alpine Road (if coming from the south/east), unless you are a careful and confident driver on narrow twisty roads. We leave promptly at the start time even if people are missing. Dogs: Not allowed. Restrooms: Shaw Flat Trail Camp at 6.5-mile point (after lunch). Also, at start/finish there's a short drive to restrooms inside the main entrance of Memorial Park. Exposure: Trails are almost entirely under trees, with short distances exposed to sun. Hiking route (detail click here): Old Haul Road Trail; Pomponio Trail; East Brook Trail; Canyon Trail; Bear Ridge Trail; Pomponio Trail (west); Park Gulch Grove Trail (loop); Pomponio Trail (south); Shaw Flat Trail; Old Haul Road Trail. Bring with you/wear: Water shoes and small towel for creek crossings; layered clothing; water (lots); lunch and snacks; hat; sunglasses; sunscreen; sturdy hiking shoes/boots; hiking poles (optional). Post-hike: For a late lunch or just a refreshment, try Alice's Restaurant on Highway 35 (Skyline Boulevard) at the junction with Highway 84 (La Honda Road).
