Overview

This is a moderate one way trail in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

This trail goes by [Puʻu Huluhulu] but finishes at Kealakomo Overlook.

Drop a car or hitchhiking will be necessary to return to your vehicle.

This hike is through wilderness area and follows the east rift of Kilauea Volcano. The rift is a weak section which may erupt at anytime. Check usgs/Kilauea.org for current update of the volcano before your hike.

Much of the hike is upon a fairly recent lava eruption (1969-1974). There are sections that hike through an older forest and scenic views of Makaopuhi crater. The eruption partially filled the west side of the crater.

Shortly after Makaopuhi, veer right onto Na’ulu trail. Follow the rock cairns which will bring you to Chain of Craters Road road and Kealakomo Overlook.

Getting Started

Begin at Mauna Ulu parking lot.
